Equestrian Programs

All trails lead here. The equestrian center is one of the most unique features of Salamander Resort & Spa. With 25 acres dedicated to entry-level equestrian use, our beautiful Equestrian Center features a 14,000-square-foot stable complete with 22 stalls, nine beautiful paddocks and a spectacular outdoor riding arena with ThorTurf footing.

COUNTRYSIDE GROUP TRAIL RIDES

$135 per person | Ages 10 & up
Discover the natural beauty of our countryside while riding our gentle trail horses. Your guide will take you through the wooded trails for a one hour leisurely walk to explore the resort grounds and picturesque countryside. Weather and ground conditions permitting.

RIDING LESSONS

$135 per person | Ages 5 & up
Enjoy a private, one-hour instruction on one of our seasoned lesson horses and ponies. All lessons are conducted by our experienced staff and focus on balanced seat, centered riding, hunt seat on the flat, basic dressage and stock seat. Lessons may include grooming, leading, ground safety and riding. We do not offer jumping instruction. Weather permitting.

SALAMANDER HORSEMANSHIP CLUB

$400 per person | Ages 10 & up
For the horse-crazy child or adult! Spend half the day in the world of horses with Essential Horsemanship, Equine Communication, Stable Management, a Riding Lesson and a Trail Ride. Each participant receives an official Equestrian Center hat, photo of your favorite horse and a keepsake photo frame. In addition, parents or adult participants receive complimentary two-hour spa facility access for two adults, one complimentary rasul treatment per package and a 10% discount on 50 minute or longer spa services.

ESSENTIAL HORSEMANSHIP

$135 per person | Ages 5 & up
Whether you are new to horses or wanting to add to your equestrian skills, this program can cover anything from grooming and handling techniques to braiding, bandaging, tacking (English or Western) and everything in between. One hour in stables.

EQUINE COMMUNICATION

$135 per person | Ages 5 & up
This unique program partners horse and human to enlighten on the topics of leadership, authenticity, clear communication and the impact of body language and energy. Explore the world of “horse whispering” and experience an interaction like none other. Group rates available. Weather permitting.

PAINT-A-PONY

$135 per person | Ages 5 & up
Tour the stables and learn about our horse’s coat colors, markings and breeds. Followed by an introduction to grooming and conformation of the horse. The session ends with each participant painting their own model horse to look like one of the Salamander horses or their dream horse! One hour in stables.

Fishing

Located off the Grand Lawn, our stocked pond is waiting for you. Enjoy a fun-filled afternoon of catch-and-release fishing.

FISHING POLE Rental | $10 per pole

Guests under the age of 16 or adults with Virginia issued Fishing License have the opportunity to rent our fishing poles and dip a line in our pond.

Beginner Fisherman | $35 per person

Spend the afternoon learning the basics of fishing in the Salamander pond, from selecting the right gear to casting fundamentals. Catch and release only. One hour program; ages 6-15 years old.

Camp Salamander

CAMP SALAMANDER

While the parents are away, the kids will play. Camp Salamander is our activity-filled camp for kids, offering countless opportunities to let loose, compete in scavenger hunts, learn about the stars and explore the great outdoors. 

  • Full day - $135 per child; 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.
  • Half day - $75 per child; 9:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. or 12:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.
  • Two hours - $50 per child; between 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.

Saddle up for foot pony races and horseshoes, take a walk to the stables and feed the horses treats, and paint your own horse magnet.

Ahoy Mateys! Learn how to be a pirate by searching for gold, creating your own treasure map and building our own cardboard pirate ship!

Kiddo Zip Lining – Kids under the minimums for the Tree Top Zip Lining can try this thrilling ride during Camp Salamander. With a guide, experience our 200’ zip line three times! Minimum age is four-years-old and minimum weight is 40lbs. $50 per child.

KIDS NIGHT OUT

Have your young Salamanders join us for a night of laughter, games and fun! Your children can enjoy different crafts, and then go out to the fire pit to make s’mores, after we can play glow in the dark bocce ball, then come splash around in the indoor pool, where you can play pool games! Zip Lining

Awaken your spirit of adventure with our Tree Top Zip Tour by Empower Adventures. Rated 5-stars on TripAdvisor and Google, this exhilarating family-friendly activity provides you with a beautiful bird’s eye view of the historic Virginia countryside.

Guided by our professional staff, this unforgettable zip lining experience takes you through the resort's tree tops and leaves you feeling energized and empowered as you seize the day and accomplish more than you imagined.

The full TreeTop Zip Tour course spans 20 acres and is comprised of zip lines varying in length from 90’ to 670’ and two suspension bridge crossings. Additional offerings that may interest you include our Moonlight Zip Tour, Intro to Rappelling, Kiddo Zip Line, Survival Training experiences and seasonal special events.

FALCONRY FIRST HAND

This once-in-a-lifetime experience presents the fascinating natural history, training, conservation and concerns about these majestic predators. Following a live demonstration of the training methods and an overview of the natural behavior of raptors, each participant has the opportunity to hold a live raptor on their arm for a wonderful photo opportunity as Falconry’s 4,000 year old history is revealed. ULTIMATE FALCONRY EXPERIENCE

Saturdays | $180 per person
A more in-depth falconry experience, we start by learning about field training techniques and care of these magnificent raptors, before the thrill of a lifetime. Watch as one of these beautiful birds fly to your gloved arm from 20 feet high or approaching from 100 feet away. Reservation required, timing based on seasonality.

Tuesdays in June | Sky Meadows State Park | $65 per person
Enjoy this off-site excursion to explore our surrounding area! Sky Meadows State Park is a 1,862-acre park in the Virginia state park system. It is located in northwest Fauquier County, Virginia in the Blue Ridge Mountains. We will depart the resort at 9:00 a.m. and enjoy a one and half hour guided-hike. Four people minimum.
