The Byrne Gallery presents Landscape Lines - Reception for the ArtistsOctober 10The Byrne GalleryArts, (+1 more)October 10The Byrne Gallery
The Byrne Gallery is proud to present Landscape Lines, an exhibition of oil paintings by Rafael Torres Correa and wood sculptures by Jeremy Holmes. The exhibit will begin on Thursday, October 1st and remain through Sunday, November 1st. There will be a reception for the artists on Saturday, October 10th from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. which is open to the public and everyone is cordially invited to attend.
The Byrne Gallery is pleased to announce the upcoming exhibition of paintings by the Cuban-born French-national, Rafael Torres Correa. Originally from Havana, this international artist has widely exhibited his work in Mexico, Spain and France. This will be his second exhibition in the Washington, D.C. area and we are proud to introduce his powerful work to the community.
Rafael Torres Correa creates lyrical universes in his large abstract canvases. His paintings evoke memories – symbolic and emotional – and conjure imagined experiences of water and floating islands with their shifting imagery and fluid focus. Like Proust, Torres Correa’s scenes are sensuous and dream like. As uncertain shapes emerge, the viewer can almost perceive the contour of a distant land reminding us of the artist’s Cuban roots in every watery surface. These landscapes are transitory territories and shifting metaphors – a state that parallels the artist’s own migrations and cultural identity.
His mixed media technique is as liquid as the subject – the canvases appear practically wet. The artist’s palette is often that of the sea, deep turquoises and blues punctuated by flashes of hot color like reflective sunlight. This mesmerizing sense of depth in the work is achieved through overlaying washes, drips, dabs and splashes of paint. Torres Correa’s emotionally moving forms can venture into dark and haunting terrain. One senses exploding stars in outer space or shadows on the distant surface from the bottom of the ocean. These paintings capture and displace us.
Ultimately, the paintings are grounded in the immediate time and space of Rafael Torres Correa’s studio by revealing the outlines of the ceramic floor tiles embedded into the first layer of the canvases. The visible imprint of the decorative interlocking patterns in the paintings, reassures us and bring us back to the intimate space where Rafael Torres Correa creates these compelling works of art.
Jeremy Holmes is an internationally recognized wood sculptor and designer who graduated from the University of New York at New Paltz and currently lives and works in Ithaca, NY. He builds abstract bent wood sculptures which emphasize materiality and an engagement between the viewer, the site, and the work.
Seen as three-dimensional line drawings in space, the installations collaborate with unique found architecture to construct a new and unexpected space. The sculptures are made by joining long thin lengths of wood together. Holmes makes thin boards using traditional woodworking techniques, soaks the wood in water and then uses a free form bending method to bend the long pieces into abstract shapes. Once the wood has dried he joins them together into different configurations, including small and large sculptures, which contrast with the geometric rooms that we build and live in.
Holmes’ recent projects include a two-person exhibition at Isabelle Lestmeister Gallery in Regensburg, Germany entitled “Atmosphere” as well as a large-scale permanent public
installation titled “Infinite” at The Donau-Einkaufszentrum, the oldest shopping center in Germany. As well as two solo exhibitions; one at The Leonard Pearlstein Gallery at Drexel University in Philadelphia entitled “Convergence” which is a 3,500 square foot bent wood installation made of 5 varieties of wood. And also a solo show entitled “Perpetual Curves” at Exhibit A Gallery in Corning, NY featuring new small sculptures and 3 wall installations. He has also had a temporary installation at Ommegang Brewery in Cooperstown, NY.
Additional recently completed projects include a commission to build the main lobby sculpture for a new 42 story high rise building on Madison and Park Avenue in New York City. Holmes plans to show at Bloom Art Fair in Germany, Scope Art Fair in Miami as well as show work at the Singapore Affordable Art Fair and the Zurich Contemporary Art Fair.
